In recent years there has been a significant expansion of commercial transportation to Martha’s Vineyard. While The Steamship Authority out of Woods Hole remains the keystone of access to the island and the only means of vehicle transport, travelers have an increased number of water and air options. This page will help provide information and guidance to seasonal visitors looking for alternative methods of reaching Martha’s Vineyard.

How Do You Get To Martha’s Vineyard?

Martha’s Vineyard is accessible by ferry or plane. The great majority of our visitors arrive by ferry, coming into terminals in Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven. See the ferry operators below.

Woods Hole, MA To Martha's Vineyard

(auto and passenger, year round)

Martha’s Vineyard is just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod. With the Steamship Authority, the trip from Woods Hole to this delightful Island takes just 45 minutes. And you have your choice of two ports for your arrival: Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs (May-October).

Steamship Authority Ferry

Travel Time: 45 minutes

The Steamship Authority operates the only automobile ferries to Martha’s Vineyard, from Woods Hole, MA. The trip takes 45 minutes, costs $9.50/person one-way, and around $100 one-way for a car depending on the time of year; the ferry will arrive at either Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs. Reservations for your automobile are required and can be hard to get during the summer months, so make sure you call. Plan well in advance! The Steamship makes the most frequent number of daily trips to the Vineyard.

Falmouth, MA To Martha's Vineyard

Getting to Martha’s Vineyard is half the fun when you sail on the Island Queen. Parking is a cinch, it’s just 200 yards from the dock. And if you have a bike, just bring it onboard. Your trip from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs is just 35 minutes. Enjoy our enclosed lounge or outside decks.

Island Queen Ferry Info

Travel Time: 35 minutes

The Island Queen operates from Falmouth Harbor at 75 Falmouth Heights Rd., Falmouth, MA, to Oak Bluffs from late May through Columbus Day.

The Island Queen is a seasonal, passenger-only ferry service (no vehicles). Your trip is just 35 minutes and our crew goes out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Parking is available. Our two parking lots are conveniently located within walking distance to the ferry dock. Drivers are welcome to drop-off passengers and luggage at the dock, before parking.

Hyannis, MA To Martha's Vineyard

Hyannis is home to the Hy-Line ferry terminal. We offer high-speed ferries daily during peak season, and are your only mid-cape departure point to the Vineyard! There are daily departures from May through October and 5-6 daily departures in the height of the summer. 

Hy-Line Cruises Ferry Info

Travel Time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Hy-Line Cruises operates from the Hy-Line Landing at Ocean Street Dock in Hyannis, MA to Oak Bluffs harbor from May through October.

Our high-speed ferries will get you to Martha’s Vineyard in 1 hour!

Reservations are the only way to guarantee available space. Please arrive at least 45 minutes prior to departure to allow for drop-off, parking, and ticketing.

We’ve been taking passengers to the Vineyard seasonally since 2005, offering high-speed ferries daily during peak season, we are your only mid-cape departure point to the Vineyard!

New Bedford, MA To Martha's Vineyard

NJ/NYC To Martha's Vineyard

You’ve got to get on a boat or plane to get there anyway, so cut out the long drive and just board a Seastreak ferry. We’ll cut out the traffic-jammed frustration and replace it with a relaxing and enjoyable cruise direct to Oak Bluffs in Martha’s Vineyard, and get you there quicker.

Seastreak NJ/NYC Ferry Info

Travel Time: About 6 hours

Seasonal service from New York & New Jersey to Martha’s Vineyard.

The Seastreak (NJ/NYC) departs the Seastreak Ferry Terminal at Highlands in NJ, proceeds to the East 35th St., NYC Ferry Terminal at East 35th St. and FDR Drive in New York, NY, and continues on to the Seastreak Ferry Terminal at Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard.

Our departure location in Quonset Point is the most convenient and fastest way to travel to Martha’s Vineyard, including time in your car and on the ferry.  

If you are flying in or taking the train, our location is closest ferry port to an Airport and to Amtrak. We are located 15-minutes from Providence Airport (PVD) and 25-minutes from Providence Amtrak Station.

Rhode Island Fast Ferry is the closest ferry service to Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Western Massachusetts and the City of Providence.

Martha’s Vineyard Airport

Martha’s Vineyard Airport is the primary general aviation/commercial airport. Check the website for an updated airline list. As the island gets busier, there are more flights from popular cities on the east coast to the island.

There are currently three rental car companies that operate at Martha’s Vineyard Airport: Hertz, Budget, and Avis. These companies are conveniently located within the main passenger terminal across from the baggage claim area. Auto rental reservations are strongly suggested during all seasons.  Taxi cabs are regularly available across from the main entrance to the passenger terminal.

Getting around while you are here

You can catch a taxi, rent a car, moped, bike, or even a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Martha’s Vineyard also boasts one of the best public bus systems in all of New England, the Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA).
